The “Band”
Decision
Roy Jr High has a great tradition of fine
bands. Performing for others on your instrument is fun. Studies have shown that
those who learn the discipline of playing an instrument test better in other
subject areas such as math and science. Learning an instrument gives a life-long
appreciation for music. Students in the beginning band do not need prior
experience playing an instrument. Learning an instrument is much easier than
most people think.
The “Instrument”
Decision
Students usually do well playing an instrument
that is of their choosing. During the first few days of school, students who
have not decided which instrument to play will be given assistance. The
registration procedure required the beginning band student to choose between the
brass, woodwind and percussion classes. This can be adjusted later of a student
needs to change from one class to another. Instruments to be taught in the
beginning classes as follows:
Beginning Brass-Trumpet, French horn, Trombone, Baritone and Tuba.
Beginning Woodwinds-Clarinet, Flute, Oboe and Bassoon.
Beginning Percussion-Snare Drum (bass drum, timpani, bells and cymbals).
Students who would like to learn the saxophone should start on the clarinet.
When is the best time to join band?
Seventh grade is the best time to start a band instrument. Starting later makes it hard t learn enough to play in the high
school band. Students who start band in the 8th or 9th
grade and find out how much fun is, wish they had started sooner.
Where do I get an instrument?
Theschool rents oboes, bassoons, baritones, tubas and French horns. Students who
want to play flute, clarinet, trumpet (cornet) or trombone must provide their
own instrument. Local music stores have reasonable “rent-to-own” agreements.
This allows a student to play for the first three months for as little as
$5.00-$10.00. Afterward, there is a monthly payment. This provides enough time
for the student, parent and teacher to determine how successfully the student
may be with a very small financial investment. Beginning percussion students
must purchase a practice pad with stand and drum sticks.
Getting started
You will not need an instrument on the first day of school. The teacher will have instrument rental information and help
students who are undecided about instrument choice to make up their mind. If you
have any questions, please call Paul Hermann at 476-5260 (Roy Jr.).

Message to Parents
A guide to enhancing your child's musical experiences.
"Music, to me, was is a representative of everything I like most in life. It's beautiful and fun, but very rigorous. If you wanted to be good you had to work like crazy. It was a real relationship between effort and reward. My musical life experiences were just as important to me, in terms of forming my development, as my political experiences or my academic life."
-President Bill Clinton
